Shawn Moll

Shawn Moll Fired

I heard rumblings about this a few weeks ago, but apparently it's out in the open now that Shawn Moll was fired from She-Hulk. (I tried to do my bit to prevent it by diligently complimenting his work, which I like.) Moll commented elsewhere that he was told by Marvel brass that they want to improve sales numbers, so he's out.

I don't know enough about Marvel internal politics to guess at who would blame poor sales on Moll, but it's entirely wrong-headed. From where I'm sitting, Shawn Moll has been the only welcome change in the book since Dan Slott's departure. While his backgrounds occasionally seem a bit weak to me, he more than makes up for it with dynamic depiction of characters and action scenes. I think he's the best artist on a She-Hulk book in decades.

It's really a terrible shame and leaves me with no justification to continue buying She-Hulk - and I've been looking for reasons for months, now. I guess I'll just hold my breath and hope for a great replacement, though it's difficult to imagine a quality artist signing up given the flailing inconsistency of the storyline and the bottom-dwelling sales figures that are the hallmark of the Peter David run thus far.

Shawn Moll Pencils

Shawn Moll posted a bunch of She-Hulk pencils to his blog last night. They're awesome.

Previews of She-Hulk #25

Wizard Entertainment has some preview images of She-Hulk #25. Shawn Moll doesn't disappoint; his art is very good.

Scans Daily on She-Hulk #24

She-Hulk #24Scans Daily has some scans from She-Hulk #24 in this thread. I don't really like that scans have been posted while #24 is still on newsstands, but Marvel must have decided to tolerate it or the company's lawyers would have sent takedown notices to LiveJournal.

The post text is fun. As an example:

So far I'm undecided about PAD's run. The MU's foremost expert in metahuman legal issues has become Dog the Bounty Hunter? But there's one extremely crucial characteristic that he kept: her status as an unrepentant fashion criminal.

It's also clear that Shawn Moll's art on She-Hulk is admired by the commenters, some of whom write that:

  • "I appreciate that the artist actually drew a superstrong heroine as really muscular, instead of rail-thin. The Jen in those panels actually looks like she could crush you, if she wanted to."
  • "Love muscles on the Jen! :D"
  • "I really like that art."
